My Uber experience

6 Jan

Many of you may have heard of Uber. They are a driver on demand service accessible by a smartphone app and go by the tagline “Everyone’s personal driver”. It seems to be quite a popular service in many cities around the world.

Uber_Logo_Black_Background

I first heard about Uber some months ago when there was this protest by taxi drivers against the service. I never really went to check out what it was about until recently. That was because I got a code from a friend and one day I thought “Why don’t I try this Uber out and see how it goes?”

So I downloaded the app. It took me a few minutes to figure it out. Haha. I see the choices of Uber X, which is the more affordable option and Uber Black, with slightly higher end cars in my vicinity, but didn’t know how to request a ride. Anyway, after some fiddling, I finally connected with my driver, Jay, who was driving a Honda Insight hybrid.

It had been drizzling and he was considerate enough to go into the carpark of my condo to pick us up. According to him, there was only one Honda Insight and one Almera in the Uber X fleet. Most of them are Myvis. So far only KL and JB offers the service as they don’t have enough drivers yet due to the strict requirements.

I enquired further and he said first of all, the driver must possess a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) license. The car must also be insured for passengers. Apparently, they do background checks as well and of course there’s the drivers’ ratings which they must maintain. He shared that some female students who take the bus from Johor and arrive late at night use the service as they felt it was safer.

So far, he enjoys being a driver as he gets to meet people of different nationalities and backgrounds, but says it can also be challenging if some riders have high expectations and gives him an earful and low rating for taking a wrong turn.

It wasn’t long before we reached our destination. The fare was calculated and charged straight to my account. Since I was using a code, the ride was free. He also gave me a rating as a rider and I returned the favour. The transaction was cashless and within the quoted range so there are no unpleasant surprises. Overall, I did enjoy my Uber ride and will be using it again in the future.

If you have not tried it and would like to give it a shot, use the code ubercreditRM30 for RM30 credit towards your first ride. Enjoy!

November Bag of Love for Women on the Go

23 Nov

Hi y’all! The November Bag of Love is dedicated to the busy women of today. So it contains a little something to either save time, or take care of your skin and so on. If you have been following Bag of Love on their Facebook page, you’d have heard about the “extraordinariness” of the November bag. It would contain something that no other beauty bag/box in Malaysia has included so far. This was enough to drive fans to press the “Get the Bag” button (apart from the bag itself of course!). The only hint given on what this item would be is that it’s from the Panasonic Beauty line. We can only guess and wait till we get our bags to find out.

Well, I finally found out! First, the very cute Levi’s denim bag.

Image

Taken with a big fluffy pink heart for Bag of Love.

Image

The interior is a red and white checked pattern reminiscent of a picnic basket.

Image

So the star is revealed! I had thought it would be the eyelash curler. We got the Doltz Battery-powered Toothbrush instead. This retails at RM99 and is single-handedly worth more than the subscription price. It reportedly vibrates at approximately 16,000 brush strokes per minute with the vibrations of a sound wave. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that it will give a more thorough brush than doing it manually for the same amount of time. Replacement brushes can be had at RM25 for a set of two.

Image

Next up is Double Serum by Clarins. This serum “combines two powerful age-defying serums into one optimum balance to help fight all aspects of visible ageing. Now you can stay younger. Longer. The only intensive anti-ageing treatment rich in 20 plant extracts that revitalizes the skin’s 5 vital functions. A unique formula the promises a visibly youthful look: firmer skin, visibly reduced wrinkles, more even complexion and less visible pores.” This is a 7 day supply. I took the sachets out to count them and found this at the end:

Image

Oo. A generous extra gift should you like what you see and wish to explore further!

Image

Dove Hair Fall Rescue Shampoo (90ml) and Conditioner (80ml). Stress can cause hair fall as well so if that sounds like you, this set may just address your problem.

Image

Last but not least, Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Aura EDT sample vial and a voucher for their Christmas Set. Interesting, feminine scent which smells floral and woody at the same time.

Family portrait!

If you like what you see, check out Bag of Love at their Facebook page. Their December bag is revealed there in case you’re looking for a nice gift. Till next time!

Zender’s Restaurant and Bar, Publika

12 Nov

A couple of weeks ago was our first wedding anniversary and the husband and I thought of having lunch at Zender’s but it was fully-booked, but the day finally came when we got to try out a simple casual lunch.

Image

Being unfamiliar with Publika, it took us some time to actually find the place. On our way there, we overheard others in a similar predicament reading out loud block names and such.

Image

They had a nice outdoor area furnished with plush armchairs and sofas.

Image

The decor inside had a similar feel, with the grey and white furniture along with wooden shelves and floors.

Image

I quite like this big wooden-framed mirror.

Image

Time for the food! This was their carrot soup. With the right consistency and not overly thick, it was served with a touch of cream and freshly-ground black pepper. It was a flavourful and delicious start to the meal.

Image

I opted for the fish and chips. Deep-fried dory served on a bed of chips, with homemade tartar sauce and garlic butter rice on the side. The rice was a tad dry but quite tasty, and the fish was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Quite well done. The salad leaves that accompanied the dish was a bit sad though. Wished it was more generous.

Image

Hubby chose the leg of lamb. Served with some vegetables, herbed mash and lamb jus. The mash was delicious with just the right hint of creaminess. The lamb was not bad, and hubby was happy with the portion.

Image

Dessert was a chocolate cheesecake (I think). The fluffy chocolate mousse sat on a soft Oreo cookie base with a dollop of whipped cream on top. It was quite rich, and was just the right portion to end the meal.

Overall quite a nice place to dine. Might come back some time if I come by here again. Check them out at their website or Facebook page or visit them at:

Wicked Bag of Treats – Bag of Love October

12 Nov

I had quite a good experience with my first Bag of Love in September, and decided to continue my subscription in October. Mimi had put together a Halloween-themed bag for the month and when I saw that it would include an eye brush, I jumped in!

Image

Cute little drawstring bag with a jack-o’-lantern design. Shown here with the Collistar brochure.

Image

Mimi on her broomstick (did I say how much I love the style of illustration?) and a voucher for Jojoba Spa. I haven’t decided if I would go for it yet, but I have been to Jojoba and found the service to be attentive and professional.

Image

SP Repair Shampoo (30ml) and SP Repair Mask (30ml). Haircare is always welcome since it’s something I would use anyway. Haven’t tried this one as well.

Image

Collistar Biorevitalising Anti-cellulite Concentrate (30ml). Hmm.. I wouldn’t say I’m very bothered by cellulite because I don’t really scrutinise my thighs that much. Nevetheless, you never know right?

Image

Nanowhite Infinity CC Cream (full-size). Now this was a winner! It looks greyish when you first squeeze it out, but upon blending, the pigments are released and the colour blends into your skin tone. I really like this as it provides decent coverage and evens out my complexion. The UV protection isn’t bad either! It also works better than all the BB creams I have tried so far which somehow doesn’t match my skin tone very well.

Image

Yay, brush! I was hoping for an eyeshadow brush, but this is close. I received the Definite Eye Blender brush. I think this is one of the reasons Bag of Love’s many fans subscribe as Definite brushes are exclusive to Bag of Love, and for good reason too. They are good quality brushes.

Image

The other full-size item in the bag, Splassh glow-in-the-dark nail polish. I was hoping for blue, but pink is fine since it doesn’t really show up in daylight. True to the Halloween theme, this provides an added fun element in the already fun bag. I put it to the test immediately and went into the darkest room in my house and closed the door.

Image

Cool, right? Pic quality not great, but you get the idea.

Image

Once again, all in the family. Let’s take a look at value.

1) SP Repair Shampoo (RM72/250ml) | RM8.60/30ml

2) SP Repair Mask (RM109/200ml) | RM16.35/30ml

3) Collistar Biorevitalising Anti-cellulite Concentrate (RM185/200ml) | RM27.75/30ml

4) Nanowhite Infinity CC Cream (full-size) RM49.90

5) Definite Eye Blender brush (full-size) RM69

6) Splassh mini glow-in-the-dark nail polish (full-size) RM3.90

This brings the total value of the bag to RM175.50 excluding vouchers and the bag itself.

The November bag has been sold out and subscriptions are open for the December bag, which comes in a chic red clutch. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who would appreciate some really nice samples from some really nice brands, head on over to http://www.bag-of-love.com/

Till next time!

Wonderbox October

12 Nov

I was looking forward to my October Wonderbox because September’s box got delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. A nice little email from Wonderbox apologised and explained the cause of delay and moved our subscription to the October edition with a promise of two additional full-sized items for the inconvenience. I thought it was very thoughtful of them and patiently waited for my box to arrive.

It finally did!

Image

When I opened it I found…

Image

The information card, brochure for RA8 and a voucher for RA8

Image

The full-sized Neutrogena Ageless anti-wrinkle and firming essence (30g) as promised. I was pleased to see this as it’s never too early to start the ageing gracefully process, plus it is valued at RM89.90.

Image

Full-sized bloop nail strips (RM12.90). I’ve never tried nail strips before unless you count the time in school where I stuck psychedelic present wrap on my nails with clear polish. It reflected the sunlight like mirrors and I was pretty pleased, heh heh. Anyway, I’ve always preferred simple and classic styles so I don’t do nail art that much. That said, this probably gives me a chance to try it out. We’ll see.

Image

Bio-Essence Nourishing Deep Cleanser with Royal Jelly & ATP (30g), Face Lifting Cream with Royal Jelly & ATP (10g), and Radiant Youth Essence With ATP & Royal Jelly (5ml)

I’m actually fine with Bio-Essence since I like their Radiant Youth Essence. This gives me a chance to try more of their line of products.

Image

RA8 Renewal Creme. I’ve never heard of RA8 before. It is described as a “rich and gentle non-greasy creme enriched with UV filters that protects the skin against harsh environmental conditions while promoting the generation of cells through the proprietary aquamarine extract. This unique formula will moisturize and clarify skin tone for a fairer, luminous and more even complexion.”

Image

So that’s it for October. Honestly, I felt a bit underwhelmed with this edition since I had expected the two full-sized products to be in addition to a regular edition. I do appreciate the thought behind it and the Neutrogena does make up for the whole box, but I think there will be those who feel that it could have been better.

Anyhow, they have just launched The Little Black Box which is a fashion box based on themes selected every month. You need to be registered first though, so if you don’t already have an account, register here. Do check it out and let me know what you think.

Brighten Up with Neutrogena Deep Clean Brightening Cleansers

23 Oct

Neutrogena has been around for decades and is familiar to most people. I remember seeing advertisements for their Liquid Neutrogena cleanser while flipping through magazines when I was much younger. I do still have a bottle in my bathroom.

So it came as a pleasant surprise when I received a box from Wonderbox about three weeks ago.

Image

Pretty purple ribbon. Wonder what it contains?

Image

Ta da! Neutrogena Deep Clean Mulberry Ultra Foam Cleanser and…

Image

Neutrogena Deep Clean Mulberry Foaming Scrub. The foaming cleanser claims to clean deep into pores removing 99% of oil, dirt and impurities. The scrub has gentle exfoliating beads to remove dead skin cells and is safe to be used daily. Both contain mulberry extract which brighten skin naturally.

I put it to the test right away.

Image

The cleanser comes in a self-foaming dispenser which dispenses just the right amount of soft, fluffy foam. I use one pump for my face and, I’m not sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me that first time I used it, but I noticed my skin visibly brighter after the cleanse. Subsequent uses did not have the same dramatic effect but I’ll get to that in a while. It also makes my skin feel quite clean but not tight.

Image

The scrub contains the little white beads and some larger red beads (Could this be the mulberry extract?). It was gentle enough that I don’t feel like I’m rubbing sand on my face so that’s a good thing. Oh, did I mention both products have this lovely fragrance? That’s the first thing you’d notice when you dispense the product.

What I do is, I use the foam in the morning and the scrub in the evening when I feel that I need a more thorough cleansing. I’ve been using them for three weeks now and must say I quite like them. Overall, I do think it has somewhat brightened up my face, although like I mentioned earlier, it’s not apparent after just a few washes.

So do check out Neutrogena’s latest range at their Facebook page. They also have a Revitalising version of both the foaming cleanser and scrub formulated with pink grapefruit.

The foaming cleanser (175ml) retails at RM31.90 while the scrub (100g) retails at RM21.90 and are widely available.

These products were sent for review by Wonderbox Malaysia. This does not affect the opinion of the writer.

Bag of Love September – Travel theme!

27 Sep

Sometime in March this year, a friend of mine in the know asked me, “Have you heard of Bag of Love?”. I hadn’t, and decided to look it up. It was interesting, but I didn’t feel that I should splurge on another beauty box/bag. Fast forward 5 months, I realised how much I would have liked their debut and April bags. Anyway, it’s never too late.

For September, it’s a travel themed bag. The bag itself is a transparent, airmail envelope inspired one, which I already know what I want to use for.Image

The goodies! The welcome note and information card featured a very cute Mimi in a pilot’s uniform. I like all their illustrations! So for this month, a few lucky subscribers would find an extra item in their bag — A CK Euphoria 15ml miniature. Looking at the picture, you’d have concluded that I’m not one of them, but that’s all right. Let’s see what else we have:

Image

O’slee Rosehip Beauty Solution Advanced Formula III (60ml). What a nice size! I’ve never tried O’slee products, but I did use rosehip oil years ago because of its moisturising properties as well as effective treatment of scars and stretchmarks. Let’s see how this one fares. I already like the light rose scent.

Image

Swiss line Force Vitale Aqua Vitale Cream (10ml). Another brand I haven’t tried although I hear rave reviews about their products. Eager to try this one as well!

Image

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Shimmer Multi-Purpose Dry Oil (10ml). Yay! I’m using my dry oil sparingly and it’s such a nice surprise to try the shimmer version. For about a minute I was tipping the bottle over and over looking at the shimmery oil flowing down like liquid gold, and the tiny bubbles making a trail as they rise through the oil to the surface. Oooo.. well, enough of that.

Image

Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua Woman EDP (6ml). This rollerball is different from the usual vials we receive and a welcomed change. It looks really classy and much easier to handle. Popular scent too.

Image

RVB Skinlab Diego Dalla Palma Cell Detoxium Purifying Clay Mask (10ml). “Intensive care thanks to the presence of ventilated green clay with detoxifying and remineralizing action. Thanks to the presence of puri-enzyme, an enzyme complex with an exfoliating and moisturizing effect, it removes impurities in a few minutes and gently refines skin texture, restoring brightness, firmness and softness all in one.” I’m trying this today.

Image

Olay Regenerist Serum (10ml).

And there you have it. It’s a good set of products to care for your skin whether your travels bring you to dry weather, sunny places or walking through crowded markets for street food.

Let’s look at the value:

1) O’slee Rosehip Beauty Solution Advanced Formula III – RM59.90/100ml |RM35.90/60ml

2) Swiss line Force Vitale Aqua Vitale Cream – RM368/50ml |RM73.60/10ml

3) Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Shimmer Multi-Purpose Dry Oil – RM198/100ml |RM19.80/10ml

4) Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua Woman EDP 6ml – RM49

5) RVB Skinlab Diego Dalla Palma Cell Detoxium Purifying Clay Mask – RM29.90

6) Olay Regenerist Serum – RM49.90/50ml |RM10/10ml

which brings the total value to RM218.20! How’s that for value? Do check out their website and Facebook page for updates and mini contests!
